What are the structural features of a heavy-duty vertical lathe?

A heavy-duty vertical lathe has its spindle oriented vertically relative to the horizontal plane. The workpiece is mounted on a horizontal rotary table, while the tool post moves along a crossbeam or a vertical column. This type of lathe is suitable for machining large, complex parts with significant radial dimensions but relatively smaller axial dimensions. It is broadly categorized into two types: single-column and double-column lathes.
The slide rest is a square-shaped component that moves along the X-axis and Z-axis on the crossbeam. The balance of the slide rest is achieved by hydraulically balanced cylinders symmetrically arranged on both sides of the slide rest, which are mounted on a cross slide. Heavy-duty vertical lathes come in two structural types: single-column and double-column. Both single- and double-column designs feature a symmetrical structure centered around the base, with internally arranged symmetrical ring-shaped reinforcing ribs that ensure sufficient strength and rigidity of the columns.
The clamping of the tool holder relies on a thrust cylinder mounted on the upper part of the slide block, which causes the pull rod to move up and down. Inside the slide block, disc springs firmly lift and tighten the tool holder, while an arc-tooth gear at the lower end provides precise positioning. The crossbeam is designed with sufficient height and thickness, as well as a rational layout, to prevent bending caused by slide block movement and cutting forces, thereby enhancing the beam’s rigidity. An AC servo motor is employed, and the worktable is driven to rotate via a V-belt and gearbox, enabling constant-linear-speed cutting.
The heavy-duty vertical lathe features high-speed, high-precision servo control. Its standard configuration includes a manual four-jaw chuck. The machine adopts a left-right symmetrical structure, combining annular stiffening ribs with evenly spaced radial ribs, and is also equipped with triangular stiffening ribs, ensuring that the base forms a robust, integral unit.
Heavy-duty vertical lathes are widely used in industries such as bearings, heavy machinery, mining, shipbuilding, wind power, automotive, railway, hydropower, valves, aerospace, and military industry.
